My daughter came down with a vicious flu the night before she was to fly back to grad school. She literally spent the night in the bathroom next to the toilet. I have never seen or heard a kid that sick. Being the good mom I am, I took photos - of course. I did not use a flash because she really wasn't feeling well. We ended up changing her flight twice! Poor kid!

It is January in Michigan and yet a thunderstorm rolled through at 2 am. Would not have been so bad except for the 80 pound golden retriever who got in the middle of our bed so I could pet him. He is not a fan of storms.

I just want to say thank you to everyone who sopped by the If It's Groovy Blog Hop! I know I had fun looking at all the projects!

I have been working on an album of the holidays. Here is one of fave layouts -

The journaling is actually folded but includes the story of this year's tree hunt. Despite having children 23 and 28, I try to maintain all of our traditions. One of those is cutting our tree down together! This year life got in the way. The 28 year old did not get home from grad school until the 20th, the 23 year old could not get out as planned, it was raining and muddy and time was running out. So I decided just three of us would buy a pre cut tree. DH was not quite ready to give up on cutting our own tree. He walks around our 3 1/2 acres because he remembers seeing some evergreens. We follow him to the woods and there was this lovely tree. It was 10 feet tall, straight as could be and though the branches were far apart, it was great for the ornaments. So we cut it and took it inside. We did not decorate until the 23rd when the 23 year old could join us.

I used glittery paint and dusted the branches with embossing powder.

My letter is D which stands for Doodling - of course! Actually - those of you know me, know I am not a fan of doodling. I am always afraid I will make a mistake! But I forced myself to doodle on this layout which was part of a vacation album. I followed the scallopped edge with dots and lines. I also drew on the photo mats and flowers. Each year I give the kids a dated ornamented. I was not happy with the selection this year so chose a Daughter and Son theme.

I tend to ignore my baby cricut but today I used if for the swirly pieces on this layout. I cut them out of a Christmas card!

With the kids being 23 and 28, I prefer not to complete a December daily. They don't get home until later in the month, plans go awry, etc. Instead i go through my photos after the holidays and make a list of pages for an album. I am starting my layouts now. Here is one of my fave pics of the kids.

Christmas Traditions

As a mom, I strive to maintain traditions - whether it is dying Easter Eggs, pumpkin hunting or the many Christmas ones we have. This year every thing seems to be falling apart! I did not want to cut down our tree until my daughter was home from grad school. So we waited until the 21st. We planed for our son to get out of work early and we would all carry on the tradition of chopping a tree. Early on the morning of the 21st our son calls. Ends up, he cannot leave work early plus he is sick! So now I am still back to the dilema of not having the entire family there. So I decide that he should come home after work and we will all just get a pre cut tree at one of the stores selling them. I have decided I will be ok with that. After talking to him, we realize he really just needs to be in bed so he odes not come. Now the questions is to wait for him or go with just the 3 of us. My husband took the dog for a walk while we were getting ready to go. He comes in and tells us to follow him. We have 3 acres of property and he found some evergreen trees. Seems he really was not willing to give up cutting our own. So we found this one and I actually love it!

This one shows us a great way to use those shaped papers! Rob has his last two wisdom teeth out in September. Of course, I had to take his picture at the Oral Surgeon's office. The last time he was so funny and loopy as he was coming out of the anesthesia. This time it was like he didn't even have any.

A Christmas Gift

My sister visited me a couple of weeks ago. Every day she grabbed the paper and did the crossword puzzle. I had no idea she liked to do those. Since I never do them, I thought I'd save them and do something for her for Christmas.

I went through a collection of used books I have and chose one. This one is about 9 " x 10" and has a hard cover. The pages had photos of children and quotes on pretty background paper.

I started gluing - adding papers and embellishments to the puzzles. Each page is different.

I think I will have 30 or so pages when it is done.

I think she will be surprised.

I will take a picture when I finish the cover.

I saw Birch Bark candles in an ad for Pottery Barn. My sister has a frame and a mirror like that so I thought candles would be a perfect gift for her. I peeled bark, glued, and added decorations.

I LOVE making mini albums! I won Pink Paislee's Phantom last week and thought about getting out the old photos and making layouts. Instead I used an acrylic album, which I have been wanting to try and made an entire album! I added shaped pages which I made out of papers. I used the stamps, brads, papers, and stickers from this line!

Pink Paislee hosted an event for World Card Making Day on Saturday. There were 7 challenges, each for a different type of card. Since DH was golfing, it was a good time to play along. Seeing great inspiration and trying something new was enough but... there was also the chance for prizes. I did not win any of the random draws but.............

I might have gone over the top on this one! This is the sketch posted on the Helmar blog

The first thing I thought of when I saw it was a hand held mirror. So that got my wheels to turning. A quick stop at the Dollar Tree provided me with two wooden little princess mirrors. I removed the "mirror", covered the wood with paper and then put the "mirror back on. The journaling circle was created on vellum with a very washed out photo of me that was taken in a mirror. It reads - I see myself looking at me. I see who I am, who I want to be. I see challenges I want to try. I see the desire to grow and improve. Mirror, mirror help me to achieve my goals and dreams. Let me believe in myself . Help me to see the very best in me.

You prepare your kids for so many things - the first day of school, graduation from college and now the first day of work at a REAL job! It only took 4 weeks after graduating from college for Rob to find a job doing network administration which is just what he wanted. I had to capture some of his morning before he headed out! So proud of you!

Our daughter is a beautiful girl who is very determined. She is very physically fit but decided to tackle a Total Body Transformation contest. She lost weight and toned and firmed. Her determination was rewarded with a win! We saw her for the first time last weekend. She looks amazing!

More wonderful Echo Park For the Record!

I decided to do all of my NSD scrapping with For the Record Papers. Can I just tell you how much fun that was! It is so nice to grab a stack of papers knowing that that I can mix and match!! The coordinating stickers and alphas help make the job that much easier! The 12 x 12 collection kit contains enough product for probably 8 layouts! The only extra items I added were buttons, flowers and graduation hat stickers. Everything else was from the kit. Thank you Echo Park!!

We celebrated a wonderful milestone last weekend as our son graduated from college. His sister flew in from Grad School to be here. The backside of Stamp of Approval was the perfect color! I used the smaller 6 x 6 squares to mat the photo and layered various strips for the border.

For this layout I wanted to highlight the photo. I made a cluster of paper, stickers and tags which is a great way to use scraps.

My 22 year old son humors me by participating in traditions that I don't want to let go of. We still dye eggs and just like when he was younger, it gets all over the table, his hands and his clothes! I layered strips of differing widths to create the border. Also added two Element Stickers. I punched flowers and tied buttons.
